North East Link Project
North East Link Project – Yarra East Main Sewer
Project Owner: Victoria State Government
Project Contractor: CPB Contractors
Sub-Contractor: Bothar Boring & Tunnelling Australia Pty Ltd
The Yarra East Main Sewer (YEMS), originally built in the 1960s, runs below Bulleen Road and services thousands of homes and businesses across Melbourne’s northern suburbs. We know that no matter the final design of North East Link, the sewer needs to accommodate construction works. The new section of the YEMS will be moved east of Bulleen Road and connect back to the existing main sewer at the Eastern Freeway. 1.8 kilometres of new sewer will be built.
Three mini tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are being used to dig the new sewer with some sections measuring over two metres wide in diameter. Seven mini tunnel boring machine (TBM) launch and retrieval sites have been built.
Global Pipe worked with the project engineering team to supply HOBAS centrifugally cast glass-reinforced plastic (CC-GRP) Jacking pipes for the construction of the Yarra East Main Sewer (YEMS) works on the Project between the following shaft locations:
- Trinity Marles Playing Fields
- Boroondara Tennis Centre
- Freeway Golf Course
DN2100 HOBAS CC-GRP Jacking Pipe SN50000
DN1700 HOBAS CC-GRP Jacking Pipe SN40000
Global Pipe supplied 1800m of large diameter HOBAS CC-GRP Jacking Pipe, including Inter Jack Lead-in and Trail pipes.
Global Pipe worked with Bothar Boring & Tunnelling to assess the project requirements and create a seamless transition from planning and specification, to construction and project delivery. Global Pipe’s expert team studied the feasibility of the project, to determine the use of HOBAS CC-GRP systems. After reviewing the project’s specifications, Global Pipe found a solution targeted to the project and then detailed the logistical solutions which would ensure the success of the project.
Engineering and Design:
Our highly qualified in-house team of mechanical and civil engineers provided comprehensive technical support, engineering and design services at all stages of the Yarra East Main Sewer project. Global Pipe is supported by the expansive engineering resources of our international manufacturers HOBAS.
Manufacturing and Qualification:
HOBAS CC-GRP pipe systems are certified to international standards from ISO, TUV, EN, and ISO9001. To meet these standards, stringent manufacturing inspection and testing is carried out, including raw material qualification, stiffness testing and dimensional verification.
Supply and Logistics:
Global Pipe provided a complete transport, freight logistics, warehousing and distribution solution to supply the pipes. The Yarra East Main Sewer site is located in Melbourne’s inner east, Bulleen –on-site storage was very limited and the timely transport and delivery of pipes were critical.
Project Management and Supervision:
Global Pipe’s team of engineers provided dedicated technical support throughout the project lifecycle – ensuring engineering challenges were dealt with immediately to minimise risk and maximise peace of mind for all project stakeholders.
Training and Support:
Global Pipe provided Bothar Boring & Tunnelling with comprehensive product support. We provided product technical training information and manufacturer guidelines to installers and supervisors.
